If not now, when?
I read a quote a while back, one I took to heart, one that helped guide one of the biggest decisions of my life - “If not now, when?”. We’ve all heard the whole “tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, live for the moment” song and dance but most of the time the inspiration passes as the stoplight turns green and we’re thrown out of our day dream, back to reality. I wanted to keep my inspiration top-of-mind, so I tattooed “one life” on my wrist. That sealed my fate. How could I stare everyday at a reminder that I’ve only got one shot and not do what I’ve always wanted to? So I am.
At the end of July I’m moving to England. I’m leaving my MMG family (not to mention my parents, brothers and friends!) behind and embarking on a new adventure across the pond. I’m happy to say I haven’t worked a day at MacMillan (what?!), because I’ve been doing something I love, with amazing people (there ya go, you got it now!). Yes, cheesy, but true.
In my four years at MacMillan I’ve learned so much about marketing, met some great people and gained invaluable on-the-job experience. More importantly though, I’ve learned what it’s like to actually be a valued employee, to be cared about, to be heard, to be trusted by my employer. Doug and Cathy uphold the same principles in business as they do in life. Being a part of the MMG family has shown me that success, in all facets of my life, can be achieved by simply living by my values and trusting what I believe.
So as much as this post is about my leaving (and how sad/excited I am!), it’s also about showcasing some very sound marketing advice (you knew I’d throw it in there somewhere!), advice Doug and Cathy have proven works, and offered for free, for over 10 years (just don’t tell them I let you in on their secret!) – Walk the Talk. No ad or promo will help you achieve loyal customers (and employees for that matter) like showing you stand by what you say, because you truly believe it.
Enough chatter, I’m off to walk my talk…. London here I come.
