We Were Told

We Were Told We Couldn’t…

When my husband and I first took over our company, we were given a lot of advice by other business owners. Here is what we were told:

We were told we couldn’t be friends with our staff so we did anyways and now they are not friends but family.

We were told “give them an inch and they will take a mile” so we gave them a mile and they gave us back 10.

We were told you can’t give your staff flexible hours because it would hurt productivity, so we did it anyways and productivity increased by 10%.

We were told you can’t allow your staff to dress casually or you will lose clients, so we did anyways and now we have twice as many clients as we did before.

We were told we couldn’t do many things and my response to that is WHY NOT?!?!?

Why do most employers feel the need to be controlling and distant? Haven’t any of them ever heard the sayings “you’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar?”, Would they put up with this kind of treatment if they were the employee? Do these bosses know there is an online contest called My Bad Boss? http://www.workingamerica.org/badboss/

Is there anyone telling you what you can and cannot do? Maybe you should go ahead and try it anyways…
