Tangible versus Intangible
This morning at 12:37 a.m. (thereabouts), the phone dragged us out of sleep. It was the security company for our office building. Apparently, the alarm was blaring and there had been ‘activity’ at one of the sensors.
Armed with my iPhone and a snow brush, I daringly dashed to the office to either confront the intruder, or pick through what was left of the place. Of course, all was in order and The Case of the Mysterious Midnight Alarm remains unsolved. Likely, a precariously-placed pantone book slipped and set off a chain of events that resulted in the snow brush army of one venturing forth to defend the fortress.
It was a near miss, and as the heartbeats settled, the incident got me to thinking: this business we’ve built isn’t about the building; the pricey Macs, flat screen TV or few antiques we’ve got scattered about. We’ve got back-up systems and insurance for that.
It’s really all about the creative back-and-forth between consultant and designer that nails a branding challenge down just right. It’s about a funky new strategic approach to marketing the same-old thing that really gets a client charged up. It’s about the satisfaction we feel when a client says, “wow, thanks, I didn’t expect you to do it that fast.”
Those rewards have nothing to do with having a nice sign on a nice building in the right part of town. They have everything to do with the great people -- staff, suppliers and clients - okay, and dogs -- that come and go from it every day, making the magic happen.
So the next time you pass our building - if it’s still standing - why don’t you stop in to meet the people inside? We'd love to see you.
